Why it is ok…

The team was down by 2, there was less than five seconds on the clock, both feet were behind the three point line, the player pulled up and missed the shot. He started to hang his head and started to feel down but his team mates wouldn’t let him they cheered for him and made him feel like the champion.

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed

In 2007 I took my kids to the movies to watch the Disney movie, “Meet the Robinsons”. The movie was all about an orphan boys adventure traveling through time. The boy was a scientist and when he traveled to the future he meet a pretty strange family. One member of the family was working on something and when he helped that family member he did not actually fix the problem but made it a little worse. The family saw the failure the boy stood with bated breath and then the family cheered concerning his failure.

Do not be afraid to fail. I worked for a few years in a manufacturing plant, The plant had hourly goals for production and when goals were meet they were marked as green. One of the engineers told me something interesting. He said that, “we learn way more from from red hours than we do green ones”.

Today you and I and everyone everywhere will fail let us all learn adjust and try again and despite our failures we will be champions.

“Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.” ― Oprah Winfrey

Always be

The movie Glengarry Glen Ross was an adaptation of a play with the same name. The movie and play show the cutthroat side of the sales industry. A famous line from the movie is “Always be closing”. The line has been repeated all over the world by everyone in sales.

In the cutthroat world of sales this is pretty good advice because if a sales person doesn’t close a deal they don’t get paid and if they don’t get paid they don’t eat. Most people who know me know that I am not a big fan of capitalism for this reason here. Capitalism is meant to divide up and manage resources equitably through placing a dollar amount on resources and then forcing consumers to work for the dollar amount by processing, or selling the resources. The problem with capitalism is that it doesn’t work. If the goals of capitalism are equitable resource allocation and proper resource management it doesn’t work. Proof is in the socio economic state of every capitalist nation on Earth. Capitalism puts money first not the person, it seems that the true goal of capitalism is to make a very few amount of people wealthy and leave all others in want.

If our species plans to survive we will need to show some kindness. Instead of Always be closing good citizens should take up the mantra “Always be kind”. Instead of amassing capital that we can trade for resources we should be focused on making sure the resources are managed and shared with our neighbors. If people do not care for each other or the natural resources then one could argue that we do not deserve either.

Instead of focusing on money we should focus on kindness and resource management. Instead of being consumers we should be citizens, kind citizens who care for each other in deeds not just words. Try today to “Always be kind”.

Back to one!

My wife is great at finding amazing dates. She has a knack for finding dates that are unique and a lot of fun. I think it was three years ago when she discovered that a film crew near our neighborhood was filming and looking for extras. I imagine that you can already tell what our date night was. You are correct, we were extras in a movie.

A movie set is weird, everyone has their role to play and only seems interested in that role. Movie scenes are not shot in sequential order and are often shot and reshot and reshot and reshot until the director gets the best shot or feels that they can piece together the best shot from all the shooting that has been done. Because of the desire to get the very best shot they can actors and extras are required to shot many scenes more than twice.

The scene that my wife and I were in was a party seen at a house the scene in the movie could not have lasted more than five minutes but it was full of extras and took hours to film this scene. The movie was Ben & Ara it is a love story with two love interests that are diverse in culture, religion, and race. If you ever watch the movie and see the party scene I am the drunk that bumps into Ara.

Every time we needed to reshot the party scene the assistant director would shout “BACK TO ONE!” Everybody in the house would move back to the spot before shooting and do the scene all over again.

Last night I was working on a project at the house I had made some huge progress and was feeling pretty good. I tried to build on that progress and broke what was working. Tonight when I get home from work I plan on starting the project all over again (because of yesterdays mistake).

We may discover that we have to go back to one sometimes or a lot of times and that is ok. As long as we have learned from shot 1 and 2 and 3 we are still making progress and in the end everything will be alright.

When the idea becomes more

I read a book called syrup. The book was written by one of my most favorite authors Max Barry. The book like all the Max Barry books I have read so far was satire. Max Barry is a genius with this genre and his books are all fast reads if you are looking for an author to follow on Amazon (I know that you are always looking for an author to follow (really did you know that you can follow authors on Amazon? It’s pretty cool when the new books come out you will know )) the author to follow is Max Barry. In the book syrup there is a line.. “The average person has three million-dollar ideas per year” -Max Barry (Syrup) That is basically how the book starts, explaining that the difference between the average person and the millionaire is that the millionaire acts on their ideas.

In 2004 there was a Jack Black movie called Envy. The movie was good and the protagonist and maybe antagonist was played by Jack Black. Every day Jack Blacks character would get a ride to work with the character played by Ben Stiller. Everyday Jack Blacks character on the way to work would describe an idea to Ben Stiller’s character. Jack Blacks character applied effort to some of his ideas and one of the ideas blossomed into a successful business, of course then the Envy sets in Jack Blacks character is tone deaf and comedy ensues.

Hellen Keller is attributed with many quotes one that is apropos of this post would be “ideas without action are useless” — Hellen Keller.

Hellen Keller is correct in this quote and idea without action is useless. Actions are hard and not for the faint of heart. I know you have some great ideas in you and I know that the world will be better off if you can act on them.

  • Believe in yourself

I know it seems crazy but one reason ideas never manifest into reality is a lack of belief in ones infinite potential, whatever the idea is you can make it happen but it will not be in a vacuum.

  • Seek help and support

No one is self made we are all products of at least one joint effort from our parents. No millionaire has made themselves a millionaire. Behind every success is a team of talented and driven people, find these people treat them like the champions they are and do something awesome together.

  • Keep grinding

Every time I see the word grind I think about coffee (man I love coffee) Its so good! We have to grind coffee beans so that we can make delicious drip coffee and when you are putting your idea into reality you will have to grind away daily and nightly so that you can make the idea happen.

  • Be patient

Good ideas, great products or systems are not built overnight it just seems like it. The team of people that built the product or system worked behind the scenes for years on that thing. Great things are like Icebergs most of the effort is hidden below the surface of the water

I know that whatever your idea is you can do it. I have seen some amazing things in my life done by all kinds of people.
